Tips for When You Get Stopped on the Street:

  • Stay Calm
  • Answer all questions
  • Ask if you are free to leave
  • You have the right to remain silent
  • Do not "bad mouth" or walk away
  • You do not have to consent to a search

If Stopped in Your Car:

  • Stop the car in a safe place as quickly as possible
  • Stay in the car with both hands on the wheel
  • Upon request, show police your driver's license, registration, and proof of insurance
  • Drivers and passengers have the right to remain silent
  • If suspected of drinking and driving, cooperate with the officer

If you are Arrested:

  • If  you are taken in custody make sure your house and your car are secure
  • Do not resist arrest, even if you believe the arrest is unfair
  • Say you wish to remain silent and ask for a lawyer
  • You have the right to make phones calls once you are being booked at the jail house
  • Prepare yourself and your family in case you are arrested
